Business Continuity Planning (BCP)

Every business is exposed to the risk of a show-stopping incident. This could range from fire to a serious computer malfunction or information security incident.

According to the London Resilience Partnership/UK Government 2006:

• 80% of businesses affected by a major incident close within 18 months.
• 90% of businesses that lose data from a disaster are forced to shut within two years.

In March 2006, the Chartered Management Institute surveyed 1150 managers from all industry sectors throughout the UK. They found that for the last three years, loss of IT had been the most common cause of business disruption. BCP is considerably more widespread in larger organisations compared to those employing fewer than 50 employees.

Directors are responsible for recovering their organisations from disruptive incidents in the minimum amount of time, at minimum cost. This requires careful planning.
